Research

Current Projects

Our research focuses on understanding what factors can help couples cope with challenges to their sexual health and wellbeing. Everyone has a right to a healthy sexuality, but this can look different for many based on health challenges and life circumstance. Research suggests that a healthy sex life is associated with better global health and greater relational happiness within a couple. However, a couple’s sexual health and well-being can decline when one partner is affected by a sexual dysfunction (e.g., genito-pelvic pain, low sexual desire or arousal difficulties), or a health condition affecting sexual health (e.g., endometriosis, chronic pain). Not only do such conditions contribute to distress for the person affected, but they can also contribute to distress within the couple and for partners.

We are also striving to understand couples’ experiences of sexual difficulties and health conditions that impact sexuality, as well as their sexual motivation. We want to better understand the challenges and successes that couples experience to better help them develop a healthy sexual motivation that can contribute to health and well-being.

Future Projects

We will soon be recruiting for a new research study, supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) exploring sexual desire and motivation among long-term couples. Stay tuned for updates!
